Mission Devotional - October 21, 2016

Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, shut my mouth and open my ears this day, that I may hear you. Amen.

Scripture: Luke 9:28-36

Journal: How have you been at listening to God lately? What has he been saying to you?

Reflection: We tend to make things far too complicated, especially when, at their core, things are really quite simple. God shows us that right here. While our tendency, like Simon Peter, is to run off and start building a million-and-one different things in the name of worship and ministry, God reminds us that it all comes down to one thing. "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him." Everything starts right there. We start by listening, and everything else is meant to flow out of that. Unfortunately, we get it backwards a lot. This is "the simplicity on the other side of complexity" as Oliver Wendell Holmes once called it. God simply wants us to listen to Jesus; everything else will take care of its self.

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

Bill Harding is currently a special representative for SIM in North America. God is using Bill's gifts and rich experience in Ethiopia as a conference speaker to challenge and reaffirm the priority of world missions. Pray today for the pilot program of a joint partnership to put into the hands of 70 Ethiopian Doctor of Ministry students the "Parchment" (a digital tablet loaded with biblical resources) and the "Firefly" (portable solar panels equipped with six LED lights that can charge the tablet or cell phone off grid).

FISH is a food distribution ministry which is sponsored by many churches and food banks in the Knoxville city area. CSPC stocks the food pantry once a year, takes calls for food and also distributes the food once per month. Pray today about how you and your family can help with FISH.

Closing Prayer: Forgive us, Lord Jesus, when we make things too complicated. Help us to hear the brilliant simplicity in these words of Scripture. Help us, this day, to listen to you. Amen.
