Deacon Ministry

Who We Are

The office of deacon was originally created by the apostles to assist in caring for the people. Today, deacons assist elders by performing the “ministries of mercy” that focus on the physical needs of the congregation.

The office of deacon is designed to meet the physical needs of the people. However, this ministry is a spiritual ministry, since it arises from spiritual motives (the experience of God’s grace, Luke 6: 33-36 and makes a spiritual impact Acts 4:33, Phil. 4:10-20)

In those days, when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

What We Do

Mercy
The primary function of deacons is to meet the physical and economic needs inside and outside of the congregation. The mercy mission includes such things as visiting the sick, the poor, and the elderly, the widows, assisting single-parent families, and helping members in emergencies.

Helping
Deacons as servants in the church are the primary overseeing resource necessary for accomplishing the practical tasks and duties in the on-going programs of the church. Although these duties are not necessarily performed directly by the deacons, they are responsible for the discharge of such tasks.

Stewardship
Deacons are to encourage and promote generous giving by the congregation, and then to collect those financial gifts. Stewardship education, collecting gifts and guiding the church in practicing good stewardship with those gifts are the responsibilities of deacons.

Property and Maintenance
Care and upkeep of all the church's facilities and property is the responsiblity of deacons.
