The Sacrament of Communion
Because we feel that the best model for bringing our children along in the life of the church is through the family we will be restructuring our process to allow you their parents to take the lead in their training for the sacrament of communion and later for membership in the church.
We are offering a training program for parents and their children who wish to prepare for the sacrament for the Lord’s Supper. As a part of you child’s overall spiritual training, there is nothing more important that you can do. We are inviting fathers and mothers, where they are able, to take the lead through this training. We believe that you and your child will be blessed as you fulfill your biblical responsibility to raise your child in Christ.
This process is separate and distinct from a new member’s class and does not prepare your child for membership. It is our experience that our children seem to be more ready to take on full church membership when they are around the 11th grade and more mature. At that time, if they are ready, we recommend they attend the adult membership class. We know that all our children do not mature in the same way. If you feel your child is ready for membership before that time you should feel free to accompany them through the adult class and membership process.
Let me outline for you briefly the process to prepare for communion.
- The material will cover the basics of the faith including salvation and the sacrament of communion. Please come to the second floor of the family life center. At the top of the stairs at the student ministry mail boxes you will find a parents guidebook, students guidebook, and Westminster Confession of Faith in modern English. Please take one parents guidebook, one WCF and a student guidebook for each student going through the material. Begin going through the material with your student(s) with the idea of encouraging your student to dig into the Word with you as you progress through the material.
- Around the 4th or 5th lesson, contact Lynn at 291-5270 to set up an interview with an Elder for you and your child when you finish the material. At that time you will have an opportunity to ask your Elder questions about the material and your child will have the opportunity to express his/her own faith and their understanding of communion.
Each child who completes this process (curriculum and interview) will be invited to participate in their first communion in a Sunday morning service. John Wood will recognize these students and their families as they come to receive communion together at the 10:45 worship service.
Our desire is to give you as parents and guardians of your student's hearts the opportunity to be heavily involved in this process WITH your student as we believe the Word encourages us to be.
If you have any questions or there is anything we can do to help you through this process please feel free to call.
May God bless you,
Student Ministries Team
