Mission Devotional - August 1, 2019
Thursday, August 1, 2019
We continue our focus on praying the Psalms with our Pastoral Search Team this month. Leoma Gilley has given us the prayers for Sundays - Wednesdays and Jim Branch has written the prayers for the other days. We will rotate these devotional readings each week, although each day will feature new mission partner prayer requests. Our hope is that you will be inspired to reflect more deeply in the scriptures and let the prayers guide you.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
O Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my pleas for mercy!
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will redeem Israel
from all his iniquities. - Psalm 130 ESV
Prayer: O Lord, hear the deepest cries of our hearts and souls this day - not only individually but also corporately. Hear all the ways we long and yearn and groan for your redemption to come - for all things to be made right once again and finally become all they were intended to be. Only you can make that happen, O Lord, so our hope is in you. You are the One who is full of unfailing love and you are the One who offers full redemption. We can't do it ourselves, no matter how hard we try.
So we wait for you, O Lord. We wait for you to show up. We wait for you to come and make things right once again - both within us and among us. We wait for you, O Lord, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Thus, we wait expectantly, knowing full well that you will come, that sun will indeed rise again, it is only a matter of time. So we wait.
And while we wait, O Lord, help us to resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands. Help us to resist the urge to try and make things happen on our own. Help us to fight the impulse to try and manage or control or manipulate our circumstances. Keep us, O Lord, from growing frustrated or impatient and help us to truly find our hope in you. Amen
Prayer for our mission partners
Mostafa and Mona Sharkawy serve among Arab Muslims in the U.K. Their goals are to see Arabic churches arise from Muslim background believers, to see new generations of leaders from Muslim believers, and to teach and prepare them for future ministry. Pray today for the continuing ministry inside the Immigration Removal Centre in West London for refugees who have arrived in the United Kingdom. Pray for opportunities and protection for Mostafa as well as open and willing hearts for the detainees as they become curious about faith and engage in conversations with Mostafa.
Hope Resource Center is a multi-faceted Christian ministry addressing such matters as sexual purity and health, unplanned pregnancy, post-abortion stress and abstinence education. Pray today for all the young women who will come to this ministry this month.
Closing Prayer: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers.
