Mission Devotional - January 31, 2017

Opening Prayer: For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. (Psalm 62:5-8)

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:4-6

Journal: Where and how do you depend on your own sufficiency or competency? What does it mean to trust the sufficiency and competency of Christ instead?

Reflection: We must once and for all give up trying to be self-made individuals. Let us cease preaching by ourselves, being right by ourselves, doing good by ourselves, being sensible by ourselves, improving the world by ourselves. God wants to do everything, certainly through us and with us and never without us; but our participation in what he does must naturally originate and grow out of his power, not ours. O, how we could then speak with one another. For whatever does not grow out of God produces smoke, not fire. But that which is born of God overcomes the world. - Karl Barth

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

Tom & Juanita Matthews serve in Tanzania & Kenya. Tom is a translation consultant to Bible translation teams from multiple people groups. Some of the groups are minimally reached for Christ and some are dominated by Islam. Pray today for the final testing and details of the Rendille New Testament translation that is nearing completion and for Tom and his team.

Mission of Hope has ministered to the people of various counties in Kentucky and Tennessee from which 80% of the residents no longer have jobs in the coal mining industry. They just concluded their 21st year for their Christmas Campaign. From their first campaign helping 150 children in 1996, they helped over 18,000 children and their families this year with food, hygiene, new clothing and new toys. Pray today for all of the children and families who were touched by this year's efforts.

Closing Prayer:

In Christ alone my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand
