Mission Devotional - January 4, 2017
Opening Prayer: Lord Jesus, Light of the world, thank you that you are here, right in the middle of my life. Give me eyes to see you and a heart to recognize you this day. Amen.
Scripture: John 1:9-13
Journal: How will you try to recognize Jesus in the ebb and flow of your life today? Take a few minutes and look back on yesterday. Where do you recognize him now in a way that you might not have seen him then?
May we look for your goodness in people who seem least likely to carry your love.
May we behold your radiance in the ones we quickly pass by at home or work.
May we discover your love in our deeper self when we feel unloving and irritable.
May we embrace you in the persons whose faithfulness we take for granted.
May we see your empathy in those serving the wounded of the world.
May we recognize your courage in the valiant people who speak for justice.
May we notice your non-judgmental acceptance in those who keep an open mind.
May we search for your gentleness when it is covered with harshness in another.
May we observe your generosity in every gift we receive, no matter how small it is.
May we reveal your mercy when we pardon someone for having turned against us.
May we welcome your joy in the delightful voices and happy play of children.
May we convey your compassion when we visit those with illness and poor health.
May we detect your patience in those who put up with our impatience and hurry.
May we unite with your peace hidden beneath the layers of the world's disharmony. - Joyce Rupp
Prayer for the church, for others, for myself
J & F live and work in one of the poorest and most heavily populated states in a country in Asia. They are seeking to make a difference in this state in both physical and spiritual realms. They have launched a micro-finance business that is creating self-sustaining means of support for churches and church plants as well as continuing to provide funds for the installation of hand pumps to provide clean water to needy areas of the state. Pray today for several people who are currently considering joining this work that they will clearly discern God's will and be able to raise the financial support that they need.
The vision of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes and coaches. Their mission is to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. Pray today for all of the FCA leaders and student athletes in Knoxville during this new semester.
Closing Prayer: Help me to recognize you, O True Light of the World, wherever and whenever you may appear. Help me not to miss you in the comings and goings of this day, but help me to see you, and see you truly, in all things. This day and forevermore. Amen.
