Opening Prayer: Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8, NIV)
Scripture: Psalm 62:1-12
Journal: What keeps you from finding rest in God alone? What is at the root of that? How can you get past that and begin to experience the rest that God intended for you?
Reflection: "Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him."
I don't know about you, but finding rest comes hard for me. Maybe it is the constant need I feel to try and prove myself. Or maybe it is the deep sense of anxiety that consumes my heart and soul on a regular basis. Or maybe it is a combination of a lot of things. Whatever the reason, the presence of an abiding rest and peace within me is a bit of an elusive creature: hard to find and, once found, hard to keep.
Maybe it was that way for King David as well. In fact, maybe that's the reason he wrote this prayer in the first place. Maybe it was through repeating these very words - over and over and over again - that he hoped, someday, to arrive at the rest and the peace his heart and soul were most deeply longing for.
And maybe it could be the same for me. Maybe if I plant these words deep in the soil of my soul, they will, one day, grow into something beautiful and substantial. Maybe they can help me to believe that God really is both strong and loving. And maybe that belief can lead me to the place of genuine trust in him. And maybe, just maybe, that trust will one day allow my heart and soul to find their rest in him. A man can dream, right?
Prayer for the church, for others, for myself
Global Partner Focus: Europe
Bobby and Teresa LaDage are working with Redeemer City to City (the church planting arm of Redeemer Church in NYC) envisioning, equipping, and mentoring church planters and their wives in order to see gospel-centered churches reach the major cities of Eastern and Central Europe. They are also now serving as European Regional Leaders for United World Mission. Now settled in Birmingham, England, pray for the LaDages as they seek permanent visas for the United Kingdom while in the U.S. later this summer. Pray also for the church planters training in the Ukraine with the goal to plant 100 new churches in 5 key cities by 2030.
Global Media Outreach is an Internet ministry that seeks to stay on the cutting edge of emerging technologies with the intent to give everyone on earth multiple opportunities to know and follow Jesus Christ. Pray today for each person that will encounter this ministry via GMO's website that they will choose to follow Christ.
Closing Prayer: O Lord, help this prayer take root deep within me, that it might become more and more the reality of my life. Amen.
