"Hope Now"

Opening Prayer: O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, both now and forevermore.

Scripture: Psalm 131:3

Journal: What does it mean for you to put your hope in the Lord right now? What about forevermore? Which is hardest for you? Why?

Reflection: "O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, both now and forevermore." Did you get that? Both now and forevermore. I don't know about you, but I usually don't have too much trouble putting my hope in the Lord for the forevermore part; it is the now part that tends to give me trouble.

I mean, what does it even look like to put your hope in the Lord right now anyway? Especially in the midst of trying to care for aging parents or trying to save money for retirement or trying to navigate a significant life transition. What does it look like to put your hope in the Lord in the midst of college decisions or interpersonal conflicts or health issues? What does it look like to put your hope in the Lord when your marriage is falling apart or when your kids are in pain or when you receive a life-altering diagnosis or you are filled with anxiety and depression? I mean, if we can't put our hope in the Lord right now, how will we ever really be able to put our hope in him forevermore?

Help us, O Lord, to put our hope in you. We cannot do it on our own. Remind us, each minute of each day, that you are both strong and loving. Hold us in your loving embrace that we might be still and calm and secure, even in the midst of chaos or calamity. You are our God. Help us to truly trust in you. Amen.

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

Global Partner Focus: Asia

Lewis and Elsbeth are living in Seoul, South Korea and working with exiled high school students. Lewis works to make evangelical literature available to the nations so that people can come to Christ. Pray today for Lewis and Elsbeth as they use their teaching to build relationships and begin sharing the gospel. Pray for a Saturday morning English club that they have started and are hoping that students will continue to attend.

Located in South Knoxville and led by Milad and Theresa Guirguis, who are displaced from Egypt, the Arabic Church is spreading the word of God and hope by embracing Christians and Muslims from all Arabic countries. Most of the members of the congregation are from Iraq, Egypt, and Syria, and many are refugees. Pray today for Milad and Theresa and the members of their church.

Closing Prayer: O Lord, help us to learn what it means to put our hope in you now - and forevermore. For if we cannot trust you with the here and now, we will never really be able to trust you with the forevermore. So in the midst of whatever we may be going through, whatever transitions we may be facing, whatever uncertainty or pain or chaos we may be in the midst of, help us to put our hope in you. You, O Lord, are in the now, even if we cannot yet see it. You are doing a work both in and through us that we will probably only be able to recognize and appreciate in hindsight. So for now, O Lord, both in the hard and in the good, help us to put our trust in you. Amen.
