Mission Devotional - March 7, 2016

Why, O Lord, do you stand far away?
Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

Today's Devotional Reading

Psalm 10:1 ESV
Christian, do not be afraid to share your heart with God. He already knows your heart (Acts 15:8). Rebuke that voice that tells you to methodically, robotically, obediently lift up dry, rote prayers that you think bring greater honor to him, but keep your heart locked up like a prison. Fearing the Lord is one thing. But tucking your tail between your legs when you approach him is another. Come in the name and finished work of your Savior, Jesus. Bring your burdens to him. Pour out your heart to him. He will hear you. God loves bold prayers. Being humble does not mean being timid. "Shake off your guilty fears" and pray. God has given you words to pray back to him in the Psalms. When you feel like he is far away, bend your knees, bury your head, and cry with the psalmist "Why, O Lord, do you stand so far away?"

Where do you feel like he is standing far off? In your marriage? In your own sanctification? Is there some rooted, relentless sin in your life? What is the condition of your neighbors' or your children's souls? Are you aware of the human trafficking in this area? Children are being robbed of life and happiness at the hands of greedy, wicked men - just like the ones mentioned in our Psalm. So pray! Humble yourself under the Lord's mighty hand and bring him your complaints, your confusion, your cries. Call out to the Lord, "Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted!" And rest assured, trusting and praying with the psalmist, "O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline you ear to do justice to the…oppressed." - West Breedlove, CSPC Director of Worship

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

Mark and Annemarie Dye are passionate about building Christian leaders to mobilize and equip the African Church for mission in the world. Pray today for the Dyes while they are in the U.S. for a 5-month home ministry stay.

The Volunteer Ministry Center (VMC) was established in 1987 and offers specialized services to the homeless and those within our community who are in crisis. VMC's programs support its two-fold mission of facilitating permanent supportive housing for those who are homeless and providing services to prevent homelessness. Pray today for the staff of this ministry as they reach out to the homeless community.
