Today's Devotional Reading
Listen: Listen to the words of this ancient prayer and listen for the prayer of God that rises in your heart:
O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, hope in the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore. (Psalm 131, ESV)
*Read through the Psalm several times slowly.
Journal: How is God leading you to pray today? What words or images seem most alive to you? Why? Sit before God in prayer today and allow him to speak through these words or images. Then offer whatever arises within you back to him in prayer.
Prayer for the church, for others, for myself
O Lord, forgive us when we get too full of ourselves - when we get a little too big for our britches. Forgive us when we fall in love with our own observations and opinions and begin to take ourselves far too seriously. Forgive us when we begin to think that we can handle things on our own, or make things happen for ourselves. For when we do these things, we take up all the space and leave no room for you to move and to act.
Humble us, O Lord, and make us like little children in the arms of their mother. Not children who are needy and demanding, but weaned children who are still and calm, safe and secure and satisfied. Content to just be held in your loving embrace. For that is what our hearts - and yours - most deeply long for. Amen.
Global Partner Focus: Asia
Michael and Kim Essenburg are serving at Okinawa Christian School (OCS), a school for missionary children and children of business and professional people in Okinawa, Japan. Pray today for the Essenburgs who are preparing to head to the U.S. for home assignment after the school semester ends in June.
Homes of Love creates families for orphaned, abandoned, and at-risk children in Southeast Asia and Africa by identifying, training and supporting in-country Christian parents who will raise these children as their own. With access to education, healthcare, and a loving family, Homes of Love children escape the dangers of poverty, abuse, neglect, and sexual exploitation and are freed to pursue healthy, vibrant futures. Pray today for the HOL children to know who they are in Christ. Pray that God will help them know their true identity and that they will be God’s instruments, ready to speak out for Him.
