Today's Devotional Reading

Listen: Listen to the words of this ancient prayer and listen for the prayer of God that rises in your heart:

My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

How long will you assault a man?
Would all of you throw him down -
this leaning wall, this tottering fence?
They intend to topple him
from his lofty place;
they take delight in lies.
With their mouths they bless,
but in their hearts they curse.

Find rest, O my soul, in God alone;
my hope comes from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation;
he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.
My salvation and my honor depend on God;
he is my mighty rock, my refuge.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your hearts to him,
for God is our refuge.

Lowborn men are but a breath,
the highborn are but a lie;
if weighed on a balance, they are nothing;
together they are only a breath.
Do not trust in extortion
or take pride in stolen goods;
though your riches increase,
do not set your heart on them.

One thing God has spoken,
two things I have heard:
that you, O God, are strong,
and that you, O Lord, are loving.
Surely you will reward each person
according to what he has done. (Psalm 62, NIV)

*Read through the Psalm several times slowly.

Journal: How is God leading you to pray today? What words or images seem most alive to you? Why? Sit before God in prayer today and allow him to speak through these words or images. Then offer whatever arises within you back to him in prayer.

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

O Lord, if my salvation and my honor depend on me, then I am in big trouble. Then my heart and my soul can never rest. Thank goodness that my salvation and my honor do not depend on me, but they depend on you alone - not you and my gifts and abilities, not you and my capacity to manage and control, not you and my own efforts and performance and wisdom, but you alone. Help me to never trust in you and, but to always trust in you alone. For you alone are God. You alone are our rock and our fortress and our refuge. You alone are worthy of our trust. So let us pour out our hearts to you. Help us, O Lord, to trust in you, knowing full well that you are constantly caring for us and protecting us and leading us and guiding us, even during this time of transition. And you alone will bring us the perfect person to lead us forward into the future - when the time is right. O strong and loving God, help us to find our rest in you. Amen.
