Today's Devotional Reading

Listen: Listen to the words of this ancient prayer and listen for the prayer of God that rises in your heart:

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord;
O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
therefore you are feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins. (Psalm 130, NIV)

*Read through the Psalm several times slowly.

Journal: How is God leading you to pray today? What words or images seem most alive to you? Why? Sit before God in prayer today and allow him to speak through these words or images. Then offer whatever arises within you back to him in prayer.

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

O Lord, hear the deepest cries of our hearts and souls this day - not only individually but also corporately. Hear all the ways we long and yearn and groan for your redemption to come - for all things to be made right once again and finally become all they were intended to be. Only you can make that happen, O Lord, so our hope is in you. You are the One who is full of unfailing love and you are the One who offers full redemption. We can't do it ourselves, no matter how hard we try.

So we wait for you, O Lord. We wait for you to show up. We wait for you to come and make things right once again - both within us and among us. We wait for you, O Lord, more than watchmen wait for the morning. Thus, we wait expectantly, knowing full well that you will come, that sun will indeed rise again, it is only a matter of time. So we wait.

And while we wait, O Lord, help us to resist the temptation to take matters into our own hands. Help us to resist the urge to try and make things happen on our own. Help us to fight the impulse to try and manage or control or manipulate our circumstances. Keep us, O Lord, from growing frustrated or impatient and help us to truly find our hope in you. Amen.

Global Partner Focus: North Africa & the Middle East

F and S are working alongside Arab believers toward the goal of seeing churches planted for those who do not have a church. Their focus is to mobilize, resource and train nationals for this purpose. Pray today for the church that F and S attend that has decided to begin a ministry to Syrian refugees.

Cedar Springs adopted the Lonsdale community in 2003. Lonsdale Elementary, with more than 400 students PreK through 5th grade, only serves the Lonsdale area. Over the years, the racial make-up of the school, whose students are 100% free lunch qualified, has changed to primarily Hispanic and African-American children. Pray today for all the children that attend Lonsdale Elementary, their families, and their teachers as they finish this school year and prepare for the summer.
