Today's Devotional Reading

Listen: Listen to the words of this ancient prayer and listen for the prayer of God that rises in your heart:

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.

The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish. (Psalm 1, ESV)

*Read through the Psalm several times slowly.

Journal: How is God leading you to pray today? What words or images seem most alive to you? Why? Sit before God in prayer today and allow him to speak through these words or images. Then offer whatever arises within you back to him in prayer.

Prayer for the church, for others, for myself

O Lord, our God, how we long, both as individuals and as a body, to be like a tree planted by streams of water. How we long to be vibrant and alive and fruitful. Thank you for the promise that as we delight in your word, and meditate on it day and night, we will be. Plant us firmly, O God, by your river of delights, by your springs of living water, by the streams of your unfailing and unending love, so that we might never be blown to and fro by the winds of mood or circumstance. Help us to know that you are always at work among and within us, preparing us for something and for someone, as well as preparing someone for us. We look forward to the day when the season is right and the fruit of this time of transition is finally ripe and ready to be seen and known. But for the time being, O Lord, help us to be like a tree planted by streams of water. Amen.

Chris and Donna Roberts are living in Müllheim, Germany working with Young Life’s German-speaking ministries. Chris is an Area Developer for Young Life’s new service-learning initiative in which he helps to develop and implement a curriculum for service learning that uses Young Life methodology to reach German-speaking teenagers. Pray today for the Roberts family as they complete the school year and begin summer plans.

Volunteers provide weekly English classes at Cedar Springs for those who need to improve their language skills. Classes meet on Thursdays in the morning and in the evening. There is an optional Bible study held after the morning classes. The ESL students and teachers hold holiday parties, go on outings and picnics, and do other fun things together. Pray today for the students that are attending these classes this semester and for the volunteers that are teaching each week.
