Cedar Springs is a community seeking to respond to God’s love by loving God, loving others, and serving the world. In the context of men’s ministry, this is accomplished through cultivating authentic gospel-centered community with God and one another.
The gospel tells us that through Christ we have been reconciled to God and adopted by him as our loving Father (Gal 4:4-7). No longer orphans having to make life work in their own power, men are free for the first time to live authentically. Jesus came to save sinners, those freely acknowledging their need of a Savior (Mark 2:17). First John 1:9 tells us if we confess our sins, he is faithful to heal us! A man who is growing in Christ is necessarily becoming more child-like in his dependence on his heavenly Father, more honest about his need for a Savior, more excited about the transforming work of the Spirit of God in his everyday life, and more humbled by God’s great love for him.
The more secure a man is in God’s love for him, the more able he is to actually love his family, his friends, his neighbors, his community, and the world as God intended. As church planter and seminary professor Jack Miller says, he used to try and disciple people from above, but “as God’s grace infiltrated my life, I grasped something of the essential nature of discipling: finding grace from God yourself and then show others how it happened… [Leading others] begins with humility, honesty, and a willingness to acknowledge your own weaknesses.” This is a core tenant in every component of men’s ministry at Cedar Springs:
- Men’s studies: Studies designed to help men encounter God in his Word alongside other men in a way that satisfies both the mind and the heart. Studies focus on a book of the Bible or topic and last anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks.
- Men’s retreat: A weekend in Montreat, NC where men can unplug from responsibilities for a weekend and be encouraged by the truth of the gospel. It's a weekend designed for men to enjoy the mountains and reconnect with each other, God, and their own hearts.
- Evening and weekend events: Events where men share from their own experience following Christ to encourage and strengthen other men and social events where guys have a chance to hang out with one another doing something they enjoy.
We intentionally keep the amount of men’s ministry events and activities low to help men remain faithful to the callings God has placed on their lives as husbands, fathers, friends, professionals, coworkers, neighbors, and community members. Each of these offerings are places for men to bring their non-believing friends, neighbors, and coworkers to be introduced to Jesus and authentic gospel-centered community.
