Local Missions Sunday 2020

Local Missions 1

We'll kick-off our 2020 Missions Conference this Sunday with a focus on local missions. All of our songs go to show the primacy of the gospel and emphasis on the call to all Christians to be on mission.

Prelude – "They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love"

When Christ gave the Great Commission to his disciples before his ascension, he charged them to go and make disciples (Matt. 28:16-20). The gospel of John tells us how we know that we have been successful in making disciples – indeed, if we are a disciple to begin with! (John 13:35) The world will know that we are followers of Christ by our love. How poignant. The second verse speaks directly to this truth: "We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand, and together we'll spread the news that God is in our land. And they'll know we are Christians by our love."

"O Church, Arise"

Having heard the call from the prelude, we respond by affirming several things: the gospel, our need to wear the full armor of God, to love the captive soul, to wage spiritual warfare, to look to those who have gone before, just to name a few. "Our call to war, to love the captive soul but to rage against the captor; and with the sword that makes the wounded whole, we will fight with faith and valor. When faced with trials on every side we know the outcome is secure, and Christ will have the prize for which he died, and inheritance of nations."

"Be Thou My Vision"

This hymn serves as a heart plea that our eyes would be focused on Christ as we run the race set before us. He alone will keep us to the end and cause us to endure. "Be thou my wisdom and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me Lord; Thou my great Father, and I thy true son; thou in me dwelling and I with thee, one."

"King of Kings"

Finally, we'll conclude the corporate singing with a grand affirmation that it is through the sending of the Holy Spirit that the church of Christ is not only born but advanced. The grand doxology of the chorus also nicely ends our time of singing. "And the church of Christ was born, then the Spirit lit the flame. Now this gospel truth of old shall not kneel, shall not faint. By his blood and in his name, in his freedom I am free. For the love of Jesus Christ who has resurrected me. Praise the Father, Praise the Son, Praise the Spirit, Three in One!"
